The baseline
You and a sister on Qalbii are non-mahram. Every interaction you have with her is a conversation between two people who could lawfully marry each other. That frames everything.
The goal of your conversation isn't connection for its own sake — it's to determine whether marriage between you is something to pursue seriously.
Tone of first messages
Open with salam. State who you are briefly — not a full biography, just enough so she knows you're a real person approaching with intent.
Ask a question that shows you read her profile. Generic openers ("hey," "beautiful smile") are low-adab and usually ignored.
Avoid compliments on her appearance in the first messages. Compliment her character, her values, or something she's shared about her goals.
Asking about her wali
A straightforward, respectful question early on: "Would you like me to involve your wali in our conversation?" This signals you take the process seriously.
If she says yes, ask how she would prefer you to make contact. If she says no or not yet, respect that. Don't press.
Common missteps to avoid
- Late-night messaging that drifts personal — keep it daylight, keep it purposeful
- Asking for photos she hasn't chosen to share
- Moving the conversation off Qalbii to WhatsApp or Instagram before you've built trust
- Voice or video calls before she and her family are comfortable
- Discussing topics her mahram wouldn't want her discussing with a stranger
The test
A simple check for any message before you send it: would you be comfortable if her father or brother read this exact message?
If the answer is no, revise. If the answer is yes, send.
